About Fes
Fes is one of Morocco’s most enchanting and historically significant cities, often regarded as the country’s cultural and spiritual heart. Founded in the 9th century, it is home to the oldest medina in the Arab world and has preserved its traditional way of life for centuries. Unlike the modern chaos of larger cities, Fes offers a step back in time, with its ancient architecture, vibrant markets, and quiet corners steeped in history. The city is divided into three parts: Fes el-Bali (the old medina), Fes el-Jdid (the new medina), and the more modern Ville Nouvelle, each contributing a unique perspective to the city’s character. Fes el-Bali, in particular, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its intricate alleyways and historical significance, making Fes a must-visit for travelers seeking authenticity.
What to Do in Fes
Exploring Fes is a deeply immersive experience that appeals to lovers of history, culture, and artisan crafts. Begin your journey in the Fes el-Bali medina, where you can lose yourself among winding lanes that lead to traditional souks, vibrant with the sights and sounds of Moroccan daily life. Visit the famous Chouara Tannery, where you can witness the centuries-old leather dyeing process from rooftop viewpoints. A stop at the Al Quaraouiyine University, considered the oldest functioning university in the world, offers a profound look into the city’s intellectual heritage. Admire the intricate tilework and architecture of the Bou Inania Madrasa, one of the few religious buildings in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. To gain insight into traditional craftsmanship, stop by artisan workshops specializing in zellige tilework, copperware, and weaving. For a peaceful escape from the bustling medina, stroll through the lush Jnan Sbil Gardens or enjoy panoramic views from the Merenid Tombs at sunset.
What to Do in the Sahara Desert of Morocco
The Sahara Desert offers an unforgettable escape into Morocco’s most dramatic and otherworldly landscapes. Whether you visit from Merzouga or Zagora, the experience is both adventurous and serene. One of the most iconic activities is embarking on a camel trek across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga, where you can witness breathtaking sunsets and sleep under the stars in a traditional Berber desert camp. Sandboarding down the towering dunes provides a rush of adrenaline, while the stillness of the desert at dawn creates a moment of profound peace. Many tours offer 4×4 adventures through the vast desert terrain, allowing you to explore remote oases, fossil beds, and nomadic villages. At night, enjoy traditional music around the campfire and indulge in hearty Moroccan cuisine under a sky blanketed with stars. The Sahara is not just a place; it is a journey into nature, culture, and tranquility, offering one of the most unique experiences in all of Morocco.
